Five staircases in the City of London
The five staircases are destined for different parts of the building — two behind the scenes and three in public view, one of which is a feature stair — so while all are steel fabricated and include mezzanine landings, the finishes vary. The four-flight feature stair frame supports 30mm thick stone treads and glass balustrades to the mezzanines.
The key challenge is to maintain the design intent of the staircases in the context of the building’s existing constraints, such as the positions of existing steelwork elements and differing deflection limits in the various locations. We carried out vibration assessments to make sure that the lightweight structural designs result in stairs that still meet the desired performance. For the feature stair, the connections details are required to be as unobtrusive as possible.
