Hugo Bell wins in Rothoblaas International Design Competition

December 2025
Congratulations to Whitby Wood structural engineering graduate Hugo Bell, just back from Italy where he presented his award-winning entry in the third edition of the Rothoblaas international competition BUILD THE (IM)POSSIBLE — a hybrid construction challenge — at a Rothoschool event.

Hugo took the prize in the ‘Designers and Builders’ category with his project Optoppen, which we will be featuring online in the near future.

Hugo Bell wins Rothoblaas award

BUILD THE (IM)POSSIBLE recognises projects that reinterpret timber engineering in dialogue with traditional materials. Rothoblaas noted that this year’s theme inspired modular solutions capable of addressing today’s environmental and social challenges. Hugo aimed to bridge the perceived gap between traditional concrete and steel design approaches and timber.
