James combines strong project management skills with excellent technical knowledge, and is adept at explaining detailed engineering information in a straightforward and comprehensible way. He says, “I believe it’s important for consultants to understand the wider drivers of projects, hand in hand with technical excellence.”
James leads and manages in-house teams as well as multidisciplinary subconsultants, completing complex schemes with multiple work streams by focusing on buildability and design optioneering. Before joining Whitby Wood in 2018, he gained first-hand site experience and worked with Skanska on reinforced concrete structures at Crossrail’s Bond Street Station (Elizabeth Line, London).
His multifaceted design experience includes basement structures, low-rise traditional construction, high-rise reinforced concrete, steel frame and structural timber. He says, “I enjoy projects with challenging above and below ground constraints, construction phasing and third party approvals, finding it satisfying to produce design solutions that provide the best approach for all these considerations.”
James is enthusiastic about his career, saying, “I enjoy the wide range of scheme and projects you get involved in as an engineer — it’s rewarding to watch your design being built and physically see your work in action.”
He also plays a key role in mentoring within the company. He helps engineering undergraduates with their final year projects and assists graduates on their route to ICE chartership status.
