He encapsulates his philosophy in a single sentence, saying, “In structural design, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Elegance is achieved not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” Then he grins, and adds, “Less is more, after all!”.
A strong believer in the importance of communication and co-ordination between architect, wider design team and stakeholders, Riccardo is committed to delivering projects — on time — across the planning, design and construction stages. He leads on design risk management and health & safety, and also takes on Client Monitoring Team (CMT) roles, ensuring that all client expectations are met with precision and care.
Riccardo values combining innovative advanced tools, such as 3D finite element modelling, with robust theoretical validation — using a pencil and paper. He describes himself as an all-rounder who thrives on versatility rather than specialising in just one area. He finds time to mentor the next generation of engineers, enjoying sharing knowledge and helping less experienced engineers to fulfil their career potential.
Whether it’s a complex project or a tight deadline, Riccardo strives to make sure everyone achieves excellence together. And no matter the challenge, he is always positive. As he says, “When you enjoy what you do, you always come up with a smile on your face.”
Riccardo’s wide-ranging experience covers research work at the University of Sydney focused on concrete and steel/concrete composite structures, and a variety of projects in the UK and Middle East. Working for award-winning architects, he gained experience in the integration of structures with façade systems, providing structural façade engineering for schemes in Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Iraq.
