ASSOCIATE

Geotechnical associate Sofia Michelaki is an excellent communicator and thrives in environments where design co-ordination and delivery are crucial to programme and budget. She describes her key attributes as, “adapting to situations, problem solving, leading by example and being client focused.”

Working in Greece and the UK since 2008, and with more than ten years of postgraduate construction and engineering experience, her expertise encompasses all project stages from concept to completion.

Her core specialisms concentrate on cost-effective, buildable solutions and value-engineered outcomes, within the following fields. Ground movement investigation specifications, supervision, assessment, reporting, mitigation proposals and design recommendations. Damage and impact assessments for tunnels, buried services and existing buildings on constrained urban sites. Developing protection strategies for third-party assets such as tunnels, railways, buried services and utilities. The design and optimisation of deep and shallow foundations, including pads, piles, rafts, retaining walls, basements and complex foundation systems for high-rise buildings. Preparation of specifications for piling and embedded retaining walls (SPERWall), with associated monitoring and trigger level strategies. Involvement with geoenvironmental features including cement stabilised materials (CSMs), soil contamination, ground-gas risk screening and earthworks management.

Sofia is proficient with design software, developing layered ground models to support robust but efficient geotechnical designs.

Sofia is a pivotal contact between multidisciplinary teams in design and construction, coordinating responses to technical queries, construction supervision and quality assurance. She prepares fee proposals, scopes of work and programmes for geotechnical packages, using her strong client interface skills to present options, risks and recommendations to project stakeholders. She also leads and mentors junior engineers, ensuring technical rigour and timely delivery of work.

Sofia’s notable projects in London include Albert & Swedish Wharf riverside mixed-use redevelopment, University of East London new academic building, Fairbank Estate regeneration rail tunnels impact assessment, Chelsea Manor Street residential/retail redevelopment and Royal Mint Gardens over-rail aparthotel/residential development.
