Tom Tosetti — the inspiring NCE Graduate of the Year

When civils design engineer Tom Tosetti came into the office this week, he was greeted by spontaneous applause across the studio … He is the popular and deserving winner of this year’s New Civil Engineer (NCE) Graduate of the Year award. The judges described him as “inspiring”, “charismatic” and “capable of driving change in the industry”.

Associate Ryan Williams describes Tom as “an exceptional civil engineer, who in just under two years has accomplished what many others would take far longer to complete”. Among Tom’s achievements are the impact he has already had in reducing the carbon emissions of Whitby Woods civils work, specifically through in-depth analysis of stored carbon in various materials, comparing SuDS approaches and optimising materials selection.

The judges praised his “deep understanding of the challenges the industry is facing to enhance the climate resilience of assets and spoke in detail about solutions … [ he ] showed genuine passion and enthusiasm about [ his ] specialist area of civil engineering …”

Tom: “With the title of NCE Graduate of the Year 2024, I have just added more fuel to my desire to help make my small corner of the world just that little bit better. I hope that the finalists, award winners, and I can continue to help inspire others to shape our planet and industry in a positive way.”

The NCE graduate/apprentice awards programme is aimed at recognising six outstanding and inspiring UK graduates and apprentices in civil engineering. This year they were selected from 119 candidates, representing 49 companies. The winners were announced on Friday 22 November at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London.
