Ashley Thomas

MEng CEng MICE
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, UK

Milan-based Associate Director Ashley Thomas joined Whitby Wood soon after its founding in 2016. He leads by example, creating new and exciting spaces anywhere in the world, bringing together engineers, architects and clients, and making full use of the latest technologies.

He explains, “I’m motivated by inspiring my team, embracing innovative approaches, being the first to trial new methods and driving ongoing improvement.”

Ashley is our Head of Technical Excellence and International Collaboration. As well as involvement in Italian schemes, he works closely with teams in India, Serbia, Singapore and Dubai. He also manages the direct collaboration between our UK and India offices.

He approaches new-build projects by focusing on benefiting clients through an in-depth understanding of value, buildability and architectural intent. He specialises in residential, student accommodation and hotel-type buildings, where his thoroughness in early stage strategic planning is underpinned by his continual progress reviews and optioneering. He excels at managing larger teams to deliver larger schemes.

Ashley’s extensive experience covers reinforced concrete framed structures, with 3D detailing, and a range of other construction materials including plywood and steel. Using his consummate technical knowledge, he’s written practice guidance notes on concrete frame buildings, for typical and non-typical design elements, analysis of complex shapes susceptible to vibration, and helped to create standard templates for design and QA processes. He loves applying new technologies, reviewing and monitoring engineering design processes to identify opportunities for improvement.

He has tutored Central St Martins architecture students on the technical aspects of buildings. A hard-working and passionate engineer, skilled organiser, problem solver and collaborative team leader, with wide-ranging experience in the design and delivery of complex projects, large and small — including The Arc, a 22 storey office and residential tower with double storey basement, and various large developments and infrastructure in the Middle East.

Ashley was project engineer for the One Ashley Road residential scheme, part of the Tottenham Hale regeneration project, and the four-tower residential Queen’s Quarter, incorporating a partially retained and adapted two-storey basement below high rise structures ranging from 13 to 35 storeys. Recent projects include reviews of complex buildings at Royal Mint Gardens and Edinburgh’s The Dunard Centre.
