Gioele Nunziatini

BSc MSc BS
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, UK

Associate Director Gioele Nunziatini — Gio — lists his key strengths as technical ability, resolving and delivering complex structural challenges and concept design. He oversees technical aspects of a variety of key projects across different teams in the practice, while also being directly involved in leading major projects, overseeing design development, delivery and management. And he concentrates on working efficiently, or as he says succinctly — “Work smart, do more.”

Gio prefers tackling intricate, multifaceted or challenging assignments, and creating unique bespoke solutions tailored to the client’s brief. He transforms concept designs into practical proposals, optimising structural performance to inform the architectural character of each project within scheme and cost constraints.

His strong grounding in technically complex projects includes concrete, steel and composite large-scale structures in the commercial, residential, mixed-use and heritage sectors. He has extensive experience in analysing building dynamics, vibrations, tuned mass dampers, time-dependent effects on buildings and the overall construction process. Added to which is a thorough knowledge of Eurocodes, UK and US codes, as well as US work experience.

A great communicator, Gio is always ready to share knowledge, explain technical matters or undertake in-depth design reviews. He enjoys liaising with clients and stakeholders, and co-ordinating teamwork across different disciplines. He particularly values his role mentoring less experienced team members and is enthusiastic about shaping their progress. He is a chartered member of the Institution of Structural Engineers.

His notable projects include Royal Mint Gardens, a mixed residential/hotel development on a challenging constrained site at Tower Hill in London. The structure is supported by complex steel transfers and is fully acoustically isolated, while oversailing a Victorian-era masonry viaduct, shallow Docklands Light Rail (DLR) tunnels and elevated DLR buildings in the form of a plant room and an emergency stairwell.

He also worked on the award-winning Rafter Walk — A 160m long steel and timber bridge structure designed against challenging ground conditions, vibration and thermal requirements. Plus listed building refurbishment of Plant Basingstoke (originally designed by Arup), and multi-use developments at Greenwich Design District.

Away from work, Gio loves quality time with his family. He is also a keen cyclist and takes to his bike at every opportunity.
