Associate Isaac Climpson assists in running Whitby Wood’s Bristol office, growing our presence locally and supporting key clients nationally, working with our teams across the UK to deliver a range of structural engineering solutions. He takes the lead on numerous challenging projects — refurbishments, extension of existing buildings and new build residential, commercial and educational developments.

When asked why he’s an engineer, Isaac replied, “I love seeing cranes at work and structures flying up. It’s followed by the immeasurable satisfaction of completing projects, sometimes after years of hard work, and seeing the clients and end-users excitement for the spaces that we have helped create.”

Isaac is a true all-rounder, with experience in reinforced concrete, steel frame, traditional masonry, timber and CLT, Passivhaus construction and individual architect-designed dwellings. He is quick to understand the big picture and decode the complex details to push projects forwards at all stages of design. He’s positive that the potential for developing existing buildings can be unlocked through alteration and extension, improving aesthetics and function while minimising waste generation and demolition. He favours inventive architectural design solutions, using holistic teamwork and focusing on buildability and de-risking.

His significant experience in delivering complex projects on site involves supporting the main contractor, and co-ordinating with specialist subcontractors and temporary works designers. He relishes problem solving and programming critical sequences of construction work, such as strengthening existing structural elements or bespoke interventions into existing buildings.

Isaac enjoys collaborating with architects to deliver well-managed and efficient schemes, simplifying construction wherever possible. Working alongside design teams and contractors, he understands client requirements and provides expertise to suit project demands and maximise value. In his words, “I take pride in being the clients ‘go-to’ for pragmatic advice and their trusted engineering partner.”

A chartered engineer since 2018, Isaac acts as an ICE mentor for a number of engineers, supporting their development as they work towards chartership. He also undertakes mock interviews to help engineers prepare for their formal professional reviews. He says mentoring others, especially those he works closely with, is extremely rewarding.

Isaac’s key Bristol projects include College Road high-end residential development with challenging ground conditions and One Hundred low-carbon extension and enlargement of an existing building. Other notable projects include Sierra House Maidenhead redevelopment, and Parkhouse Street, Ravensbury Estate Regeneration and 651 Old Kent Road in London.

For a previous employer he worked on Brabazon Phase 1 and Factory No.1 in Bristol and Winterstoke Academy Expansion Weston-Super-Mare.
